FOR A TREE TO BECOME TALL IT MUST GROW STRONG AND FLEXIBLE ROOTS

Yoga in education

Sources suggest that young people are facing more stress than ever before, which is why school leadership now has to commit to addressing social and emotional wellbeing within improvement plans.

Yoga is a mind and body-based practice that can be used to address wellbeing in all young people from Foundation up to University. Yoga can help with exam stress, behavioural, emotional and social regulation, ASD, ADHD, trauma, anxiety, depression, and eating disorders. It can be introduced in schools and colleges as a cost-effective solution to promoting wellbeing for pupils and for staff.

Pupils are more likely to engage in lessons that focus on well-being if they are of a practical application, so I focus on offering safe, non-judgemental and fun classes relevant to age/sex and needs.

Studies have shown that mindfulness activities such as yoga, meditation and breathing exercises, all of which I offer within a yoga class, can significantly improve:

  • Students’ physical, emotional and mental well-being:

  • Concentration levels

  • Attainment and progress levels

New neural networks develop through regular and repetitive yoga asana, breathing and relaxation practices.

Students learn to regulate their own thoughts, emotions and behaviours. Yoga develops good postural alignment and breathing patterns which help to relieve anxiety and depression. And finally, the gradual and progressive nature of yoga supports incremental healing and learning which has lasting positive

WHAT PEOPLE SAY

Dear Mrs Bertram

I just wanted to say a huge thank you for your time last Friday. It was fabulous to see such a cross-section of pupils clearly getting so much from your Yoga session. I think I told you about the quote that I picked up on at the end of the session from a Sixth Former - music to our ears. The Yoga session that you ran was both relaxing and fun and has certainly made a number of pupils aware of a new and exciting way of relaxing.

Thank you so very much.
